2012 Independent Spirit Awards

Hey all!  This is Chelsea aka Mama Coatwolf

So I realize that this is a couple weeks over due… but I wanted to post some pictures of the Coatwolf crew at the Spirit Awards.  We rolled out to the Santa Monica beach in the Medusa car, walked the red carpet (which was actually purple), met some really awesome people, got a chance to hang out with some good friends that we have met this last year, and drank a shit-ton of free whiskey.

For those of you who don’t know we had the incredible honor of being nominated for TWO Spirit Awards this year.  The first was the John Cassavetes Award - this award goes to the best feature film made for under $500,000.  Honestly, to me this is the absolute coolest award to be nominated for because it really is the essence of independent filmmaking.

The second award nomination went to Joel Hodge for Best Cinematography.  Yay Joel!  Other films nominated in this category this year include, The Artist and Midnight In Paris so we were in pretty amazing company.

Regardless of the fact that we didn’t win either award we still had so much fun.   I know it sounds cliche but it really is such an honor to be included in something this huge and to know that people out there are appreciating your work.

Til next time… :)

XOXO

PODCAST AND CASE STUDY(OF DEATH)

It seems a fair amount of people have been curious about how we made Bellflower(I get asked a lot anyway). These two things stuck out to me as interesting for those who are curious for more information on the subject.

This FILM INDEPENDENT CASE STUDY is insane to me. A fine gentlemen, Paul Cowling from Film Independent, had to interview me with the help of his assistant for almost two hours. He somehow managed to wipe away all the garbage i said and make a detailed factual account of how Bellflower came into existence - step by step. I freaked out when i read it because it was so accurate. I can’t tell this story myself and it’s my story! How did he extract this information so precisely from all the garbled non-sense i told him?

Then there is this podcast that Vince Grashaw and I did fairly recently. It also focuses heavily on the filmmaking side of things and Chris McCaleb who runs the whole thing is a surprisingly good host and keeps the whole thing moving and all of us in high spirits.

BELLFLOWER TEASER - COATWOLF VERSION

I just found this on one of the hard drives and thought it would be a good anti-thesis to the last post.

It’s the longer version of the Medusa Car Teaser that we originally presented to Oscilloscope. In the end we decided to go with a shorter one that didn’t give away any of the movie. This still has the temp press quotes that “the boys” put in. I remember when i first saw them i was super excited, the guys at O-scope had to kind of talk us down, in hindsight i’m very grateful they did. I just watched it, when the quote comes up “its the years most original and possibly best film(ever in history!)” made me a little bit uncomfortable, giving ourselves a solid public ego stroking. But otherwise it seems like a cool little thing, so here it is.

UN-RELEASED BELLFLOWER TRAILER - COATWOLF VERSION

This is the original trailer i wrote for Bellflower in 2003 before the first draft of the script was even finished. When Bellflower sold earlier this year we got the script back out and decided to make it. We all liked it, but it made me so uncomfortable that i buried it.

Time has gone by, our theatrical release is almost over and everyone still seems to like the film which i think has taken a lot of stress off me. The DVD came out yesterday so this is the last chance for this trailer to have any purpose. I feel like it was our best attempt to make something that truly represented the movie and as odd and uncomfortable as it makes me feel, I have decided to post in on here for whoever cares to see it.

Hope you enjoy.

WEBSITE UPDATED!!!

This page will be active now.

With all the unexpected(and much welcomed) success we have had this year, i wanted a direct outlet where i can post news about what we are up to and speak in an unfiltered way. So, for the record, this site is the final word and will always be controlled by myself and whoever else on the Coatwolf team feels like posting here.

Thank you for coming by, we have a bunch of random Bellflower media, behind the scenes segments and news that we’ll be posting in the coming weeks.

OLD COATWOLF NEWS
